Foil Lessons on the Treasure Coast of Florida
Brian and Chris did not grow up as watermen. Brian was a salesman. Chris was an auditor at a CPA firm who grew up playing baseball. When they opened Fin & Foil in 2021 they had never ridden a foil, had no suppliers lined up, no inventory on order, and no real idea what they were getting into. Their words: two rednecks with a credit card.
They figured it out the same way they figure everything out — by getting in the water, making mistakes, and asking better questions than everyone else in the room.
Chris still says he is not the best foiler at any beach. He also says Foil Drive is the only reason he can foil at all. Nicholas O'Bea, one of the most respected foil riders on Florida's east coast, took Chris out for dock start lessons twice. On the second session something clicked. Three days after watching a how-to video, Chris was doing it on his own. That progression — total beginner, honest struggle, real breakthrough — is exactly how Fin & Foil teaches.
They have been running demos at the Stuart Causeway since the early days. They used to load up Foil Drive batteries, show up at the water, and tell whoever was around to come try it. They called it a foil rodeo. No pitch, no pressure, just gear on the water and an open invitation.
That is still the spirit behind every lesson they run.
What foil lessons does Fin & Foil offer?
Three disciplines. Three different ways to get on foil. Each one is taught by people who ride the same water, know the same conditions, and have been doing this on the Treasure Coast since the beginning.
Lesson Type
Wing Foil Lessons
Wing foiling uses a handheld wing to harness wind power and lift you above the water on a hydrofoil. It is the most versatile discipline we teach — flat water, ocean bumps, river runs, all of it is available once you build the skills.
Lessons are held at Stuart Causeway, Jaycee Park, and Jetty Park depending on wind and conditions. Best season is November through April when the Treasure Coast's frontal wind system is most consistent.
Lesson Type
Foil Drive Lessons
Foil Drive is a battery-powered motor system that mounts to your foil and gets you flying without wind or waves. No wind required. No waves required.
The Indian River Lagoon gives you flat calm water year-round, and Fin & Foil is the US warranty and repair center for the system — Brian assembles, repairs, and rides Foil Drive every week. This is the fastest path to foil fundamentals for most beginners, and the best bridge into wing foiling for riders who want more time on foil between wind sessions.
Lesson Type
E-Foil Lessons
An e-foil is a self-contained electric surfboard with a hydrofoil underneath. A motor drives the board above the surface and you control speed with a handheld remote. No wind, no paddling, no prior experience required.
Most riders are making sustained flights within the first hour. It is the most accessible way to experience what foiling actually feels like, and a great first step for anyone deciding whether to go deeper into the sport.
Not sure which lesson is right for you?
Here is the honest answer.
If you have never been on a foil and you want the most approachable first experience, start with e-foil.
If you want to build real transferable skills that carry into wing foiling and surf foiling, start with Foil Drive.
If you already have some board or water experience and you are ready to commit to a discipline, wing foiling is where the most range lives.
